Claud McGaughey Obituary

Claud Earl McGaughey, 79, of Garrison, Texas, passed away on June 19, 2019 in Garrison. He was born on June 30, 1939 in Alto, Texas to Hall G. McGaughey and Ella Mullins McGaughey. A graveside service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Alto City Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, June 21, 2019 at Garrison Funeral Home.

Claud grew up in Alto and graduated from Alto High School with the class of 1957. He was a proud member of the Alto Yellowjackets football team and was famous for being the Alto Yellowjackets Baseball homerun derby king. Claud went to work for Southwestern Bell and served a wonderful tenure there from 1957 to 1991 until retirement. He then continued on to become owner and operator of Pineywoods Cellular and was known for his honest and dependable service. He was a man with many talents, hobbies and passions. He was very involved with sports, especially youth sports. He enjoyed being umpire for games and always had a great time watching any sport when he had the chance. Traveling and visiting new places was something he always found time to do when he wasn’t working. He also liked to camp at Camp Tonkawa with his family and taking his grandkids on adventurous excursions searching for big foot. Claud spent some fun filled times with his bowling league, “Yea Old Phart.” The most precious moments and memories were spent with his family. Claud was a member of Good Sam’s Travel Club, Optimist Club Doches Community Credit Unit, Make a Wish Foundation and First Baptist Church in Garrison.

Claud is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Williams McGaughey; son, Kyle Kelly and wife, Joanna; daughter, Brenda Gilbert and husband, Larry; grandchildren, Theresa Gilbert Deegan, Robyn Gilbert Wiley, Robert Gilbert, John McGaughey, Jeremy McGaughey, Aaron McGaughey, Kyle Kelly, Jr., Dylan Kelly, Krystal Kelly and Desiree Kelly; twelve great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hall and Ella McGaughey; sons, Keith Kelly, Jeff McGaughey and Kent Kelly; first wife, Nell McGaughey; brother, Michael McGaughey; and grandson, Kevin McGaughey.
