Betty Louise Williams Kelly McGaughey was born January 5, 1938 in Chisholm, Texas. Her parents were Haskel O. Williams and Allie Mae Williams.
Her family lived in Houston until Betty was 15 when they moved to the family homestead in Stockman.
She worked for many years with Southwestern Bell Telephone. She started as a phone operator and worked at the phone facility on Mimms St. in Nacogdoches. Later she worked in the Engineering Department where she met Claud Earl McGaughey. After retiring from the phone company, she started a temporary employment agency.
After selling the agency, she and Claud set out to tour America. They traveled from Florida to Maine, from California to Washington, and to Alaska in their motorhome.
When they settled in Garrison they became members of First Baptist Church. Betty loved going to church and interacting with the youth. She loved the “Teens” program. Sitting in the pews and playing with the younger children always gave her great joy.
For many years she worked with the Garrison Heritage Society at the Wiley Hotel. She loved working with the ladies to prepare the meals and seeing all the people who came to the Wiley for lunch.
Betty is survived by her son, Kyle Kelly and wife, Joanna; daughter, Brenda Gilbert and husband, Larry; grandchildren, Krystal Kelly, Desiree Kelly, Kyle Kelly, Jr., Dylan Kelly, Theresa Gilbert Deegan, Robyn Gilbert Wiley, Robert Gilbert, John McGaughey, Jeremy McGaughey, Aaron McGaughey; Grayson Knight, Tristan Knight, Preston Knight, sisters, Joyce Calhoun and Janet Hudman, many great- grandchildren and nephews and nieces.
